Multi-functional Deck Benches

In assessing your need for extra seating, more storage in the area of your deck or just another decorative accent, one need only to look to the home improvement facilities or discount stores where there is an abundance of options from which to select.  Deck benches are available in simple designs which offer nothing more than additional seating space while the more elaborate styles offering storage for cushions and outdoor accessories in inclement weather conditions.  These might be constructed of the higher grades of plastics that prove weather-worthy or some are available in expensive woods, such as cedar and teak which is noted to be impervious to rain and extreme conditions.

To add interest to the simple bench, some models come with attached planters on either end where greenery might add a nice touch.  It could present a nice location for bright summer blooms or in a more formal setting, the well sculptured shrubbery or topiary...as extensive as your imagination!

Deck Benches

There are some who would venture into building their own deck bench.  Bracket/hardware can be purchased and all that it needed is the actually boards.  If you have access to some used surf boards, these might make for an interesting conversation piece when displayed on your deck or patio. For the DIY enthusiast, there are a few pointers to be considered in the construction of deck benches.

  • Never use nails.  Bolts should always be used to provide maximum stability preventing potential accidents.
  • Leave small gaps between wooden slats which will allow for air circulation in the heat of a summer day and also allows water to drain which adds to the life of your bench.

If your decorating style leans toward the Polynesian theme, there are some very interesting deck benches to be found on the Internet.  The artful carvings on the 100% coconut tree wood are quite unique in design and craftsmanship.  This would certainly be a lovely addition to your outdoor setting as well as provide additional seating when you entertain.

Deck benches can become an open slate for accessorizing with the use of seasonal printed cushions, pillows and plantings.  In warmer climates where the patio/deck is in use year-round, one could transform this entertainment area for the Christmas holidays easily by changing out these items and adding appropriate lighting.
