The Teak Garden Bench - A Wise & Beautiful Choice

There are a numbers of excellent benefits from choosing a teak garden bench. The main one is the massive durability and lifespan of this timber variety. Teak, (Tectona Grandis) is a tall deciduous hardwood tree. It is dense and heavy with a tight grain and full of natural oils.

It is grown in the tropics of South East Asia and also in Africa and India. Today, most teaks are grown on managed plantations.  Trees tend to grow more quickly in their ideal climate and the warm tropical humid conditions will enable teak to mature in about 40 years plus - although sometimes 30 years is the age they are felled. Plantations carefully manage and rotate their planting and felling of stocks.Teak is very highly regarded and remains a king in the world of wood for furniture use.

It is very limited for export and therefore rather costly.  Despite the expense, people will choose teak as it looks very beautiful, is hardwearing and needs little care. In fact teak is the first choice of authorities when buying new park and public hardwood benches.

There is a vast range of styles and designs in teak from a simple modern look to a more ornate traditional design, many with matching patio dining and seating sets, so you could co-ordinate if you wish. As mentioned, this variety of wooden garden garden bench will require next to no attention from you. However, this factor will determine your bench’s appearance and eventual lifespan. If you wish to get the most years use from it as possible, then oiling annually or specialist preservative application every year or two will be sufficient. Include an occasional wash as well to keep dirt build up low.

Treating will enable the rich mid brown color to remain for a long time.  If you are not so concerned about appearance and actually like the silver weathered look, then no work is needed. Just a wash when it gets dirty, no scrubbing as this raises the grain and allows water ingress and subsequently rot.  Maintenance can add a further 15 years plus to the lifespan of a teak garden bench, which should achieve an astounding 30-50 years easily, depending on its situation.

In summary, your teak garden bench will be more costly than other wood varieties, but will reward you with many years faithful service and will grace your garden with its classic charm and elegance.  Take your time and choose wisely as it will be with you for a very long time!
